"When we experience trauma or stress (physical or otherwise) the body instinctually draws into the fetal position as an act of self preservation, which contracts and tightens the muscles in the hips. That tension, and all the emotions that come along with it, is stored in that space, which is why it’s very common to have a strong emotional response to deep hip openers. If you’ve ever felt like bursting into tears during Supta Baddha Konasana (reclining bound angle pose) you’re not alone!
Pair this with the amount of time spent sitting at desks, in cars and wherever else, shortening the space in the hips, there’s a lot to let go of. Make yourself comfortable, build a fortress of cosy props, listen to your body when it asks you to pull away or stop, and most importantly, breathe."
During the month of April, we'll be making a little more space for you to stretch deeper into the emotions held in the hips. Yin (Deep Stretch) Yoga encourages you to be present with physical and emotional tension as you hold poses for 3-5 minutes. Finding your comfortable space, with a fortress of props, straps and blankets to help create comfort, the deep connective tissue (known as the fascia) is able to release in ways we don't often make time for in our every day.
One of our favourite ways to bring some Yin loving to the evening is to simply lie in Supta Baddha Konasana that Van mentioned. Picking our a favourite cushion to support knees that may not reach to the floor, and lying on a comfy yoga mat or piece of carpet, peace comes the second we feel the hip flexors release. Combining a quick 5 minute stretch with a warm cup of tea, and sometimes a good cry, we find the release we didn't know we needed.
You can come and try a Yoga class for yourself and lean deeper into the hip openers. Book onlineor through the MindBody App and make sure to leave space for some self-love during the transition into winter.
