Spring Clean Your Health

AerialFit • Oct 08, 2016

Spring is a time of new beginnings and is often represented as flowers blooming in the sunshine. It is often referred to as a time for detoxing your mind and your body, letting go of what doesn’t serve you and blooming into the best version of yourself!

You might have found that winter hibernation has kept you indoors, you haven’t wanted to go outside, and warming winter food may have been all too tempting! That’s okay, nothing a little spring cleaning can’t fix. Here are our favourite tips to de-clutter, and scrub away at your bad habits to leave you feeling squeaky clean and sparkling.

1. Eat all the colours of the rainbow!

Spring is also a time of great produce here in Sydney, so it is time to swap the hearty soups for salads, and the hot chocolates for water infusions and kombucha! Salads don’t have to be boring, and you don’t need to go crazy with sugary, salty or preservative filled dressings to make it delicious. Get creative with your salads to add density to the nutritional value- we love adding pepitas and walnuts, cranberries and pomegranate and even fresh mango slices! * Look out for our follow up blog post THIS IS WHAT SPRING LOOKS LIKE- our favourite recipes for Spring!

2. Exfoliate!

It’s time to say laters to our dry and scaly winter skin. We love visiting our friends at Energy Scoop and whipping up a quick and easy dry skin exfoliant! Add 50g of organic raw sugar or bath salts, 1 teaspoon of coconut oil, and 5 drops of peppermint or grapefruit essential oil. Scrub away in circular motions before your bath or shower and lightly moisturise after!

3. The Queen of detox- the liver!

The liver is the predominant organ for detoxing the body, and by drinking lemon in warm water, you are able to activate the two pathways responsible for breaking down toxic substances that are passing through.

4. Unclutter your mind

Mindfulness is affectionately known as brain hygiene, as it reduces your stress levels (toxic for the brain!) and tames your monkey mind! The aim is to be in the present moment without feeling regrets from the past, or anxieties for the future. You only need to meditate for 5 minutes a day to see it work! There are three steps:

  1. Sit in a comfortable position ( a chair is perfect)
  2. Focus on your breathing, if thoughts come, just let them go
  3. When your mind wanders (and it will!) bring your attention back to the breath

5. Exercise Daily

Do you know the benefits to moving daily? It's medically proven that people who do regular physical activity have:

  • up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
  • up to a 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes
  • up to a 50% lower risk of colon cancer
  • up to a 20% lower risk of breast cancer
  • a 30% lower risk of early death
  • up to an 83% lower risk of osteoarthritis
  • up to a 68% lower risk of hip fracture
  • a 30% lower risk of falls (among older adults)
  • up to a 30% lower risk of depression
  • up to a 30% lower risk of dementia

You don’t have to be hard on your body, in fact, the kinder you are to your joints, the longer they will be healthy for! Lom impact exercise won’t shock your joints or wear them out. Our classes are all low impact, and mix cardio with flexibility, so that you have enough options to keep yourself interested and motivated, but also get the right balance for your body. If you think about it, our studio somewhat embodies this concept of spring cleaning! We have our BarreFit and Barre classes to get the blood flowing and endorphins racing (not to mention helps shed any winter weight!) as well as our Yoga and Stretch classes to open the body and energise your subtle energy systems. The perfect way to detox!

6. Me- time

Saved the best for last! There is nothing more precious than me-time, and it takes a lot of time and worn out faces for most people to realise this. The problem with always being busy and giving to others, is that it leaves very little energetically for you! When you spend time on yourself, not only does it recharge the batteries, but it will boost energy levels, relax the mind, and boost your confidence. When you dedicate time every week to yourself, you will notice that this enables you to be the best version of yourself, and then you will be properly able to give to others, without feeling emotionally drained afterwards. Whether it’s a barre or yoga class, a coffee on the porch, or a walk in the park, make ‘me-time’ a non negotiable in your calendar & thank us later!

I remember being 5 or 6 and going with my mum to the Marconi Club for aerobics every week. I was supposed to sit up the back with the other kids, but my legend of a mama let me join in with her, as long as we stayed in the corner out of everyone’s way. I don’t remember much from the class, but I do remember feeling incredible energy & joy. To this day it is one of my fondest memories, which is remarkable considering I hardly remember it at all. That’s why when Josh came to me asking if we could put on an 80’s aerobics class, I said yes, even though it doesn’t really fit our studio brand. I knew that it would bring so much light & laughter that we absolutely had to run it! For two weeks after the class, I heard so many stories from everyone who attended. Apparently the atmosphere was like a grand final footy game: absolutely electric! This class will make a guest appearance every now & then on the schedule, if you need any convincing, here are some reviews from its debut. It can only get better! Josh’s class was easily the happiest hour of my day! I couldn’t stop smiling! If I was to describe the class to someone, I’d tell them to expect an hour of positive vibes, high energy, amazing tracks, and a lot of fluro. It’s so much fun that you (almost) forget you’re working out, ‘till you realise at the end that your 80s themed eyeshadow is no longer where it used to be. There was such a great buzz to the class. Everyone was in such high spirits and it made for such a great time. I’d also say that it doesn’t matter if you haven’t tried aerobics before, it really does cater to everyone. Over all; loved it! Daniela M Josh’s class was an eclectic mix of everything great about the 80’s - fast-paced dance combos that were both fun and workout based, moves that channeled authentic 80’s movies and musicals, aerobics mixed with classic pilates moves and a bangin’ playlist to sweat to! I loved every minute and couldn’t stop singing along :) Emily M I had such an amazing time! The music was good and the dance moves were easy to learn. I would recommend to everyone who wants a fun workout but still challenging enough! I can’t wait for the next class! Angela T
